Where You Can Find My Work

As an author, I am probably not alone in this: people do not seem to be finding my work. So the command decision was made to put up a post that gave my readers the links to where they can find me. Bored? Then move on while I chat away!

My website is Bonnie Cehovet - Author

My Facebook page is Bonnie Cehovet

Draft2Digital - A New Way To Go

Self-publishing has become the preferred way to go with many writers. We can write at our own pace, we have control over thing like cover images, and we can promote our books where we want to and how we want to. There are many avenues for self-publishing, such as Create Space, Outskirts Press, Book Baby, Lulu, Author House and many more. I currently have a WIP that will be out later this year, and I was sure that I knew where I wanted to publish it. A new (to me) little gem just came into my radar, and I am seriously considering publishing with them.

The site that I am considering is Draft2Digital. They promote themselves as a publishing site that provides support for authors. Authors do the writing, chose their list price, chose their digital stores, and submit their work. Draft2Digital does the formatting, submits to the chosen digital venues, and keeps track of daily sales. And authors can make  unlimited changes to their work.

As an author, you submit a word doc, which Draft2Digital converts into digital format with clean chapter breaks, and a functioning table of contents. Formatting is pure hell for me, so this sounds like a giant reprieve! I also like that I can check daily on my sales with no problem.

There is no upfront cost, no style guide or special formatting requirements. ISBN numbers are assigned free of charge, unless provided by the author. Vendors include Barnes & Noble, Kobo, iBooks, Scribd, Inktera, Tolino, and 24Symbols. If an author has a set publishing date, preorders can be arranged with vendors. End cost is a 15% commission on net royalties (approximately 10% of list price). The author retains all rights.

Draft2Digital is currently pursuing contracts with several other digital publishers. They will also send authors a PDF of their formatted book that can  be used for submission to other publishers. This means I can continue with my original plan to submit to Create Space and Kindle, while working with Draft2Digital at the same time.

Please remember that this is a site that I have not, to date, worked with. I am not recommending them, just saying that they look viable to me.

New Year - New Voice?

Going into the new year, many things are changing ... as they should. Some projects have been brought to completion, some have been released, new ones have come into being, and thoughts are coming together on others. As my life undergoes various changes, I find my author's voice changing with it. Perhaps I should look at this as a fine tuning, rather than a massive change. I have more confidence in my writing now, and allow my muse to say whatever she wants to. Certainly makes her happy!

So, what is this thing we call our author's voice? It is, of course, simply our style of writing. This will change from genre to genre, and project to project. We work within certain inner guidelines that define who we are,and this is the over-riding quality that we see in everything that we do. We need to be authentic to who we are, and who we are is an evolving person. Therefore, our author's voice will evolve along with us.

Over the years this little Cappie person is very pleased to see that she does have a modicum of a sense of humor. Not all the time, just sometimes. But it is there. I am comfortable with letting it come out to play - as long as it doesn't get too sarcastic! I know that a writer's style is a combination of their basic personality, and a consideration for the specific audience they are writing for. (Yes, one of the things that this self-taught writer learned was to target her audience before defining a project, and before beginning to write.)

I would add one more thought to the mix - the tone of the times that the author is writing about. The tone and style that one writes in is just as much a part of the backdrop for a story as the characters personal style, and the physical world around them. Going into 2012, we are looking at huge social and economic changes, and a spiritual quickening in life on the physical plane. i never want to be afraid to express the changes around me as I see them in my work, whether it is fiction or mainstream writing.

Is your writer's voice changing? If it isn't, does it need to?

Soul Purpose

I just finished reading a very interesting article on identifying and living your soul purpose. Why do author’s need to know about this? Does it just give us ammo for a new storyline, or perhaps justification (i.e. a “reason”, or “purpose”) for becoming a writer? Writing is an extension of who we are – it allows us to express our beliefs, our way of being, in many different formats. We don’t need a reason, or justification of any kind, to do this.

Soul purpose goes to the core of who we are as individuals, it speaks to what we are here for in this lifetime – our very reason for being here. When we are aligned with our soul purpose, life has a very nice flow to it – things go smoothly, what we need comes to us in a timely fashion, with very little effort, and with no strings attached.

There are some easy “tells” that will let you know that you are not aligned well with your soul purpose:

1. You are not happy with your work/career – you no longer find it fulfilling.
2. Long-term relationships are falling away, and you don’t understand why. 3. You want to relocate, but are not sure where you want to go.
4. Your career life, personal life (or both) seem to have come to a standstill.
5. Your health is not what it once was, or what you would like it to be.

Yes’s to one or more of the above indicate to me that a little “time out’ is necessary. You cannot envision your big dream, much less achieve it, when your life is not functioning!

I don’t have a stock answer as to how we discover our soul purpose. From my own experience, I can say that, generally speaking, what I am fighting in my life is what I need to pay attention to. If I am drawn to something, t hat is whee my focus and intent need to go.

The Internet has many resources, as does your public library. Take the time to identify your soul purpose, and your life as an author will thank you!

Long Chapters Or Short Chapters - What Is Your Preference?

Does it make a difference to a reader whether the chapters in a book are long or short? It does to me. I like shorter chapters, as they feed...
